The red deer is a native species found in Hungary.
In recent years, alongside the observed population growth, its range of distribution has also expanded.
According to official estimates, there are currently around 80,000 red deer in Hungary. The annual harvest reaches approximately 30,000 individuals, of which about 9,000 are stags.
The most successful time to hunt stags is during the rutting season, which typically lasts from September 1st until mid-October.
The two most common forms of hunting are stand hunting and stalking.
A traditional and popular method is „barkácsolás” (driven hunt from a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh), where hunters pursue game using a carriage or, in winter, a sleigh.
The hunting of hinds and calves is traditionally carried out through stalking, stand hunting, or carriage-driven hunts. In recent years, however, it has also become common during driven hunts, known as battue hunts, organized with larger hunting parties.
