Mouflon

Mouflons are among the most ancient inhabitants of the European wilderness. These wild sheep originate from the Mediterranean region, and several subspecies can be found across the European continent.

The first mouflons were introduced to historical Hungary in 1868–1869, specifically to Ghymes in Nyitra County. They arrived via the Frankfurt and Brussels zoos and originated from Corsica and Sardinia.

The first mouflon introduction within the present-day territory of Hungary took place in 1901 at Füzérradvány. The founding stock originated from Nagyappony and Ghymes. Up until 1942, nearly all subsequent introductions were based exclusively on the expanded population from Ghymes.

Today—thanks to the success of introduction programs—mouflon can be found throughout nearly all mid-mountain regions of Hungary, typically in isolated, patch-like populations. A significant population also exists in Somogy County.

According to official estimates, approximately 10,000 mouflons live in Hungary. Each year, around 2,300 individuals are harvested, including about 740 rams.

Hungary is one of the European countries where mouflon hunting is available. The country offers excellent hunting grounds with abundant mouflon populations. Hunting mouflon in Hungary is a unique and memorable experience within the nation's rich hunting tradition.
